Today is a Day of Remembrance for our community

Categories: Chancellor's Messages

Dear Niner Nation,

Today is a Day of Remembrance and reflection for our community as we commemorate two years since the tragic events of April 30, 2019.

I was in Toledo, Ohio, when news came that day about what was unfolding at UNC Charlotte. As a mom and as a university president, my heart ached for a community I did not yet know. But I listened closely to the words of my predecessor, Chancellor Emeritus Phil Dubois, as he told the world that Niner Nation would not be defined by this tragedy but by its response. And I watched with emotion as Niner Nation vowed never to forget Reed and Riley.

I have been a Niner for less than a year, but in that time, I have watched and learned from a community that has been united and fortified by the challenges it has endured.

You have taught me about resilience and perseverance. I am awed and inspired by Drew, Rami, Sean, Emily, their fellow students, and Professor Johnson who were in Kennedy 236 that evening, and how they have continued to pursue their education and goals.

And most of all, you have taught me about Reed and Riley — their bravery that evening, the incredible young men they were, and the indelible mark they left on the lives of all they touched, including all members of Niner Nation who have committed to honor them in memory.

Throughout today’s Day of Remembrance, I encourage you to participate in the many events that are planned — both in person and virtually — culminating in a virtual remembrance program at 5:15 p.m. Tonight’s program will be broadcast in the football stadium for members of the campus community who would like to watch together. No tickets are necessary, but space will be limited and safety protocols will be in place. I also encourage you to share messages of support with others in the UNC Charlotte community.

No matter where you are today, I hope you will join me in wearing green, demonstrating to the world our community’s pride, unity and resilience.

We are All Niners, and we are #CharlotteStrong.

Sincerely,

Sharon L. Gaber
