Niayai Lavien is a first-generation Liberian-American from Charlotte. She is double majoring in political science and philosophy and minoring in Urban Youth and Communities. Niayai has been active in Student Government Association for three years, and before being elected as the 2018-2019 Student Body President she served in multiple capacities within the organization including as Speaker of the Senate, Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, and Chair of the Consitutional Review Committee. Niayai has also been the membership chair for College Democrats and a senior counselor for the Students Advising Freshman Excellence program within the Dean of Students' office. She has participated in the Women's Leadership Development Program, Leadershape Insitutute, Activate, Social Justice Insitutute, and she has interned for Charlotte Councilman James "Smuggie" Mitchell. She has also volunteered for the Hillary for America and the Roy Cooper campaigns and has served as an intern for Rep. Alma Adams (NC-12). Niayai is interested in education reform, immigration law, social justice, and local government. Niayai plans to attend law school or teach with Teach for America after her graduation from UNC Charlotte.
